(Abby Cahoone) Stress, that big bad feeling we all endure from time to time. Whether it’s work, relationships, or the inner monologue you can’t seem to quiet down, odds are we all need to relax from time to time. Mudras are a helpful tool to help mindfully calm down and combat that anxiety that you may be working through by re-opening different energetic portals within the body.

What is a Mudra?
This Hindu practice, in Sanskrit, means “sealing in the energy”. Simply put, a mudra is a gesture oftentimes made with the hands that locks and guides energy flow and reflexes to the brain. These are commonly used in yoga and meditation practices. By moving your hands in different ways and stimulating different points of the palms or fingertips you can send different impulses to the brain to help you feel less urgency in the moment and more open to different things.
Awakening the Body.
Your body is made up of many different energy systems, chakras, and meridians that are responsible for moving energy around the body. Over time, different energy systems or nadis can become blocked with negative, stale, or old energy. Using mudras can help clear, balance, and begin to move what needs to in order to clear that channel for you once again.
When you begin to tune into what is happening inside your body you can begin to awaken it more deeply. By becoming more aware of how energy flows and becoming aware when a certain system is blocked you will find moving through the day far less stressful. All it takes is a few minutes of mindful breathing and connecting every day.
Why the Hands?
Your hands hold much more power than you may think as they can be referred to the “control panel” of the body. Each fingertip is thought to hold a different element
- Thumb: Fire
- Index: Air
- Middle: Space
- Ring: Water
- Pinky: Earth
When these points are stimulated by using light pressure using the thumb you can bring these elements to balance within the body. The hands are full of meridians, or energy portals. You can practice opening said portals for different results whether you are wanting to open your heart, calm down, conjure your inner power. The beauty of using mudras is; you always have your hands with you so you can always use these tools whether you are walking, speaking with someone, or sitting at your desk at work.
Try these Mudras For Yourself:
This is one of the most commonly used mudras as it helps one concentrate, improves memory, and increases knowledge. This mudra stimulates the endocrine and pituitary glands when you bring the index finger and thumb together allowing your other fingers to rest stretched out. Make sure your back is straight while you do this one and concentrate on your breathing!
This mudra is the “Earth mudra” and can help you feel more balanced and grounded after practicing it. This will also help alleviate that groggy “middle of the day” feeling and breath new vitality into you. This is done by bringing the ring finger and thumb together at the tips and allowing the other fingers to relax stretched outward.
This mudra helps increase your vitality or life force energy. This will also help boost your focus so it is perfect for a pick me up at work when you need a little extra boost. This is done by bending the ring and pinky fingers and meeting with the thumb. The index and middle fingers remain extended as you focus on your breath and breathe this energy in.
There are many different mudras you can try for yourself to elicit different feelings and open different portals. Try exploring different ones for yourself and see what opens up for you!
