What are Affirmations?

An affirmation is something you say to yourself on a regular basis. When we repeat something in the mind or through our words enough times your brain is going to start to program it as truth. Whether what you say is positive or negative does not matter, if you think or say it enough times, you will find that your mind will automatically go to thoughts like what you affirm during a certain situation. This can be very good, or it can be harmful if what you affirm is generally negative (ex. “I am fat” or “I never have enough money”.), so you are going to want to start being mindful about the things you affirm for yourself.

Why Should this Matter to Me?

The subconscious mind is a powerful thing, constantly storing the things we experience. When we begin to plant seeds in the mind of certain subjects or ideas they will grow into bigger, more powerful “plants” or ideas that we have about ourselves and the world. The things you speak and think about is creating your reality because they fine-tune your perception of your reality and your part in it. Because the subconscious mind houses what goes on below the surface of what we are aware of thinking every day, we want to make sure that we are dominantly thinking more positive things about ourselves so that subconscious mind is operating on positive energy instead of negative.

What can Affirmations Change for Me?

Affirmations can change so many different things, some topics people will use affirmations to start changing are:

  • Weight loss/ Body Image
  • Attracting money
  • Attracting love
  • Physical and mental health

And so much more than just those few!

How to Make Affirmations Work for Me.

Here are some ways to make sure the things you are trying to attract or change in your life will start shifting when you start using affirmations.

Believe, Believe, Believe!

One of the biggest reasons affirmations don’t always work for people is because they do not believe in what they are affirming for themselves. If you want to change your life, the first step is believing in what you say! You may want to start with very believable affirmations- things you know can easily happen, just to show yourself how effective your mind really is. If you were to try and lose 50 pounds and affirm “I love my skinny body” as you look in a mirror and only can see what you are unhappy with, you will have a very hard time believing in what you are saying. If the feeling is not there to back up the words, your affirmations will lose a lot of the power they could hold.

Stay Present with what you are Affirming.

When stating your affirmations you want to make sure you are keeping it in the present tense. You wouldn’t want to remind yourself that you “will find the love of your life” because this keeps you in a state of “it is not here yet”. Instead, you want to remind yourself that “I (you) am always surrounded by love and experience it in many different ways every day” or “Love is all around me and I see evidence of it often”. It also feels better to remind yourself by affirming in the present tense how easily in reach the things we want are.

Repeat!

If you are looking to make some conscious shifts, you are going to want to repeat the affirmations you tell yourself several times a day. Writing down your affirmations even 10 times in a row in one sitting can make them stick better in your mind and help you believe more deeply how real this thing truly is for you. Be sure to repeat your affirmations on a daily basis and see how quickly you start to see evidence take root.

Attach a Feeling to the Affirmation

As I said earlier, your feelings about what you say are very important. When you are making your list of affirmations or making one that you will repeat daily, try to feel how amazing the energy of what you are looking for is. A healthy person feels in love with their body, a wealthy person feels limitless and unstoppable, someone in love spreads love where they go… you get the idea right? When your state of being matches your affirmation it makes it much more powerful.

Writing your Own Effective Affirmations.

Pinpoint what you Would like to Change.

You may want to change your body image, find more love, attract a better job, etc. but find out what it is that you are looking to change and why you would like to change it (ex. I want to lose 10 pounds because I would like to feel healthier and better about my body).

Pinpoint Limiting Beliefs to Stop them in their Tracks.

As you figure out what needs changing, you may find a belief or two comes up from previous affirmations you may have been accidentally saying for some time. One may be “I never have enough money” (a very commonly usedaffirmation). Once you spot a limiting belief you will want to make sure your affirmation helps you feel as if that negative belief is invalid. For the money example, you may want to use an affirmation such as “I am finding money as much as money finds me”, it’s a light very broad affirmation that feels good to say because it reminds you that you do not have to search for money, and it can even find you (you could find it on the sidewalk or get a nice tip at work).

 

Write it in the Present

I have already talked about the power of the present moment, but it is one of the most important things about affirmations. Make sure you are reminding yourself you’ve already got what you want. It may feel a little funny at first, you may have to spend some time at it, but this is how your affirmations will become most effective.

I love using affirmations in my everyday life, and I have seen them change things not only in my life but the lives of others. Your words both in your mind and from your mouth have a lot of power, use it to your advantage!
