(Abby Cahoone) Intuition is a word we hear thrown around a lot these days, but some may not realize that we all have an intuition. It is not something that is exclusive to the psychics and palm readers of the world. This is something we all can and should utilize in our everyday lives, let’s dive into intuition and how we can use it.

What is Intuition?

Intuition is your instinctual guidance. It is the power or faculty of attaining to direct knowledge or cognition without evident rational thought or reference as defined by the Merriam- Webster Dictionary.

Your intuition is that little voice, or “gut feeling,” inside of you that tells you to go a different way to work only to find out you’ve avoided a giant accident. It’s feeling a certain applicant is right for the job. It’s the ping inside that tells you to try a different coffee shop this morning where you meet the love of your life. It can also be that urge to speak about something you normally wouldn’t with someone and end up making an important business contact.

You can also find your intuition works to give you some precognitive skills. You may think of someone moments before they call you. You might get a flash of insight about someone’s mental state before even speaking with them. This can also be referred to as “psychic ability” and it is housed in the third eye chakra (between the eyebrows) and in your solar plexus chakra (in the middle of the abdomen, this is where that “gut feeling” comes in).

“There is a universal, intelligent, life force that exists within everyone and everything. It resides within each one of us as a deep wisdom, an inner knowing. We can access this wonderful source of knowledge and wisdom through our intuition, an inner sense that tells us what feels right and true for us at any given moment.”

– Shakti Gawain

Your Intuition is like a road map from the Universe.

We are constantly asking the Universe for things that we want in our everyday lives. We do this through our thoughts as we go through different experiences throughout the day. This can be on a small scale or a large scale. It can be conscious or unconscious. The fact is, we are always asking the Universe for something and our intuition is a way the Universe helps guide us to what we want. It’s those ideas that come out of nowhere that is the Universe’s way of gently saying “go this way”.

It has been said “when we ask, it is always given” by Abraham Hicks. It may not be given right away but on some vibrational level, we are always given what we seek. When you listen to your intuition by taking “inspired action,” you take a stance of non-resistance (not pushing against what is being presented to you) instead of overthinking why you can’t do something you go for it.

We use our Intuitive abilities in our everyday lives.

  • In part, we wouldn’t have evolved as a species if it weren’t for our intuition. Our ancestors had to use their own intuition in order to survive, to know what to eat, how to protect themselves from the elements, and nomadic people used their intuition to help them move to the next most suitable place for them. There was, of course, trial and error, but it was based on intuition followed by inspired action.
  • We use our intuition when we meet people, we read them in a sense, figure out the appropriate topics to speak about, we even use our intuition when it comes to approaching new people.
  • We can use our intuitive abilities to find lost items. After realizing something has gone missing all of a sudden you know to check a different spot and it’s there!
  • You think of a friend you haven’t seen in years only to see them later that day in the grocery store.

These are just a few of the many examples of how we use intuition in our everyday lives. But as you can see, we use it pretty often.

Like any muscle, Intuition can be strengthened.

And one of the most powerful ways to strengthen your intuition is to actually start using it! One great way to start strengthening your own intuitive muscle is by paying attention to the thoughts you have. You’ll begin to notice that your analytical mind tries to kick in and discount that gut. Pay attention to the thoughts that come after you have an intuitive spurt of insight, they may be trying to talk you out of what you feel is the right path based on past experiences. This may look something like:

Intuition: “I should go to this different coffee shop this morning”
Mind: “I couldn’t possibly do this, it’s more expensive than my normal place, it will take an extra 5 minutes out of my morning… (etc.)”

This sort of thing happens all the time, but when you become mindful of that second and third thought that follow your intuitive insight and move out of that comfort zone holding you where you are, amazing things begin to happen!

Other ways to strengthen intuition:

Spend time on your own.

When you take time to yourself you get to know yourself better, and in turn, you strengthen your inner wisdom. When you are constantly bombarded by the hustle and bustle of everyday life that inner voice can get stifled. Spend time on your own, meditate, journal, get back to your mind.

Use your creative energy.

By working the creative muscle in your brain you get into a flow state. In the flow state, you become more susceptible to that inner wisdom and guidance from the Universe to flow freely to you.

Recognize when your intuition speaks.

“First of all, in order to be able to use your intuition, you must able to recognize it when it speaks to you. Intuition usually isn’t loud or demanding – it’s subtle and communicates in different ways for different people.”

Jack Canfield

It is by noticing how you get these spurts of intuitive insight that is important. They may come in as thoughts, as flashes of images in the mind, as a hunch, as a feeling in your body. Figure out your intuitive type (clairvoyance, clairsentience, clairaudience and claircognizance) to better understand your intuition in general.

Take Inspired and Immediate Action.

Instead of second-guessing or making a list of excuses as to why something won’t work or doesn’t make sense, take the action to support the insight you got. Take the leap and follow the insight!

Your intuition is a very powerful resource to have, and something we all have! The more you use it, the stronger it will become.
