(Sterling Nicole Bennett) Studies have shown that familiar scents from long ago help trigger memories in a much stronger way than cognitive memory alone.

Imagine This!

You are on a beautiful island surrounded by sand and clear blue ocean as far as the eye can see. You can hear the waves crashing against the shore. You feel the sand beneath your toes. You take a deep breath in–fully lucid within the moment–soaking in every ounce of the beautiful paradise and let a long breath out. You look down and find a strange flower that you’ve never seen before. You lift it to your nose and inhale. The aroma is like nothing else you’ve ever experienced. It is a completely new smell to you. You decide to hang on to the strange flower.

A few years pass and you’ve forgotten the full beauty of the island. You’re sifting through an old memory box and come across… What’s this? The strange flower?  Despite the dried out petals, you sniff it once again. Then, it all comes rushing back to you like a wave.

You are vividly standing on the island once again with your toes in the sand. Just as clear as the moment you were there.

That’s how programming your brain with aromatherapy can work. Taking a different scent from each journey you embark upon can be a wonderful tool to use when dreaming.

Cool! How Can I Use Aromatherapy in my Dream State?

Many have taken the initiative to create what is known as a Dream Pillow.

A Dream Pillow is a special pillow filled with herbs, essential oils, and anything else that might provide the scent you’re trying to achieve.

The idea is that when you sleep on this custom scented pillow, your brain will naturally smell the scents embedded within the material and send you into a captivating trip down memory lane in your dream time.

Some report that this helpful tool assists them in becoming lucid in their dreams.

Herb and Essential Oil Dreaming Combinations

  • Encourage Vivid and Creative Dreams – Rose petals, Mugwort, Hops, Lemon Verbena, Lemongrass, Jasmine, Mimosa, Mint, Cloves, Orange peel, and Marjoram.
  • Encourage Lucid Dreams – Clove, Mugwort, Anise and Clary Sage. Another good combination for lucid dreaming is Rose, Helichrysum, Sandalwood, Palo Santo, and Patchouli.

What combinations can you come up with? Where will you go in your dream-state paradise?
