In the next part of our Star School series, we’re looking at the planets through the houses. In this lesson, we’ll look at the Moon through the houses in the natal chart.
Author – Theresa Reed
Last month, we looked at the Sun in the houses – now it’s time to move on to the Moon.
A reminder: the Moon represents the emotional part of you. This is how you express your feelings and nurture others. It also symbolizes motherhood, intuition, and the unconscious.
The houses represent different areas of your life. Wherever the Moon lands in your natal chart will indicate where you get all emotional ’n stuff. Keep in mind that because the Moon is changeable, wherever it lands in your chart, conditions will fluctuate. Got it? Groovy. Let’s roll!
Moon in the 1st: The Moon placed in the 1st produces an emotionally driven personality. Here, the emotions are worn clearly for all to see. It’s almost impossible to contain them. Emotions can be rash due to the 1st house’s connection to Aries. There is a tendency to react first, think later, especially when dealing with stressful situations. Emotions can be overpowering and sensitivity is amplified. Sometimes this placement indicates mother issues. If the Moon is poorly aspected, there may be an inability to cut the apron ties. Norman Bates probably had an afflicted Moon in the 1st. Famous people with this placement: Micheal Jackson, Madonna, Whitney Houston, Henry Cavill.
Moon in the 2nd: Money is important to 2nd house Moon people. They like to have plenty around and can vacillate between being a spendthrift and a miser. Finances are often changeable which can lead to strong emotional reactions around money. Touch their money and you’ll see what I mean. The quest for security may drive these folks to be ambitious in acquiring financial security. Many of these individuals are good money managers with strong business acumen. Money can be made through careers with the public or through working with women. If the Moon is in a fixed sign, the chances of holding on to their cash is greater. Afflicted Moons might experience great gains and losses. Famous people with this placement: Brad Pitt, Drew Barrymore, Mike Tyson, Richard Branson.
Moon in the 3rd: Here the mind becomes restless, responsive, and imaginative. The emotions color the thinking and can produce a dreamy, sensitive type of personality. Emotional factors will influence the way the individual communicates. Third house Moon people are restless souls. They often move about or may travel frequently. Routine bores them and a change of scenery often does them good. This is not the most practical placement for the Moon – folks with this placement need an anchor, especially if the Moon is afflicted. Learning how to stay put and “finish the job” is important for their growth. This becomes easier as they mature. Famous people with this placement: Eminem, Jack Nicholson, Gwyneth Paltrow, George W. Bush.
Moon in the 4th: Like the 3rd house Moon, this placement produces an antsy nature that may have trouble staying in one place too long. Many moves are possible. The need to belong is strong here. Without a cohesive family dynamic, these souls feel a bit lost. They will keep searching until they find their tribe. Home is important to 4th house Moon peeps. Although they may change residences frequently, they love having a comfortable home base. Family is also relevant. In fact, the family may influence their emotional outlook, particularly the mother. If afflicted, the individual may cling to the mother ala Grey Gardens. It’s important for them to learn to stand on their own two feet and think for themselves outside of the tribe. Famous people with this placement: Donald Trump, Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, Freddie Mercury.
Moon in the 5th: This position of the Moon indicates a strong emotional drive around romantic relationships. Pleasure is important and often the individuals will be rather changeable when it comes to their romantic lives. They can be players who get easily bored with commitment. Which means: they are not the most reliable partner unless they have plenty of fixed signs in the chart. On the flip side, this placement can also indicate codependency – especially if the Moon falls in a water sign. This pleasure seeking isn’t just centered around romance – because the 5th house symbolizes investments, it can also indicate a person who loves to spend money or play with the stock market. In some cases, it can indicate gambling. If the Moon is afflicted, there can be great losses through unwise speculation. The Moon in the 5th is also ideal for childbearing for it can indicate fertility. People with the Moon here tend to be good with children. That being said, an afflicted Moon might indicate a parent who can’t let go of their kid. That mother-in-law who insists on living next door and making junior’s lunch long after he’s married? Uh huh. Famous people with this placement: Britney Spears, Kristen Stewart, Steven Spielberg, Mark Wahlberg.
Moon in the 6th: When the Moon sits in the 6th house, it indicates an individual who may experience ups and downs with their health. The state of health will often fluctuate, especially when there is emotional stress. Because of the Moon’s connection to the stomach, this can often manifest as digestive issues. A good diet and stress management techniques will go a long way to keep these sensitive folks feeling good. Emotions also heavily influence the job. People with 6th house Moons want work that feels good. They may choose meaningful jobs or they may seek a harmonious working environment. This placement can also indicate many changes of employment. Emotional intimacy in relationships is a must. Even though the sensual nature of these individuals is strong, it can’t be just about sex. Learning how to be vulnerable with a romantic partner while maintaining boundaries is a must. When the Moon is afflicted, the individual may struggle with emotional intimacy in relationships, which may cause them to constantly change partners. This placement also indicates dealings around inheritances and taxes. Gain through the mother is possible. Famous people with this placement: Vladmir Putin, Nicki Minaj, Bill Clinton, Charlie Sheen.
Moon in the 9th: This lovely placement of the Moon produces a philosophical nature with a desire to understand the world. They may have many journeys in life. Or, if they are not able to travel, might be intensely curious as to how the other half lives. The Travel Channel: always on. This may also produce a nature that is a bit restless. Instead of settling down, the individual may feel as if there is always something better out there. This could impact their ability to be content where they are. Religion and education are important to these types. They also possess a strong moral compass. Even if they are not sure where they are going, they always try do the right thing. The individuals also seem to have a knack for knowing exactly what the public wants. If they are involved in politics, they can be excellent politicians who do their best to take care of their community. This is also a great placement for actors or performers – they thrive on applause. Opinions of others can become problematic if the Moon is afflicted. In that case, too much worry about what others think can create stress. The artist who gets a bad review and decides to never paint again is an example of a negative 10th house Moon. Oftentimes, this placement can indicate many career changes due to the individual’s need for emotional satisfaction. If the job no longer makes them feel happy – or appreciated – they’ll move on. Moon in the 11th: Friends are everything to 11th house Moon folk. They need to belong and often find support through groups and friendships. Sometimes, the friends replace the family, especially if they have a lousy home life. Friendships with women will be especially important. That being said, it’s often a large group of acquaintances rather than close intimates. People with this placement enjoy knowing lots of people from different walks of life but this may lead to superficial relationships. The 11th house also rules hopes and goals – the Moon here may produce fluctuating goals. They want one thing for a while but then move on to a different mission. Sometimes this may seem to be based on a whim. Learning how to set goals and stick with them isn’t an easy thing for these types but if they learn how to follow through, they can achieve much of what their heart desires. They must also guard against being too sensitive. Their feelings can be easily hurt, which could often make them do or say things that they later regret. In some cases, they may have trouble understanding their own feelings or motivations. This is not an easy placement for the Moon but if the individual works on understanding their emotions, they can find a healthy way to express them. Occasional sabbaticals or therapy do these sensitive people a lot of good. Famous people with this placement: Rihanna, Russell Crowe, Lenny Kravitz, Greta Garbo.

Theresa Reed: As a Catholic schoolgirl with a superstitious mother and a grandma who felt omens like other folks feel arthritis, it’s not too surprising that Tarot, astrology & other intuitive arts would become my driving fascination — and my life’s work.
